More often than not, men don't typically spend much time thinking about how their wardrobe looks. Whether you're going out for the evening or getting ready for work, taking a few extra moments to coordinate what you're wearing can be great for first impressions and also show that you care a bit about how you look to others.
The Basic Colors: White, Gray, and Black - In order to create a look for yourself, you need to start with a neutral base. These three colors create the perfect foundation to build your look upon. For example, if you choose to wear a white dress shirt, you can select a bold and bright tie to accent it without looking ridiculous. Alternatively, a black jacket and tie will compliment a bright green dress shirt nicely. It all depends on what you want out of your look.
Choose Complimentary Colors - Colors that complement one another are not open for debate they are universally understood to go together from a scientific perspective. With this in mind, you should consider looking at what is called the color wheel, which you can easily bring up with a simple internet image search for the name. This wheel diagram is designed to place complimentary colors directly opposite of one another. This makes it easy for you to see what colors will look good when put together, leaving you with no doubt that you made the right choice in your wardrobe.
Choose Colors of the Same Value - When combining colors in your wardrobe, you should not only choose complimentary colors, but colors of the same value. By value, we mean the relative strength of each color. For example, a bright neon orange has a much higher value than a muted, pastel orange. Although you may be choosing complimentary colors when picking out what to wear, they may not always appear to be that way if they vary greatly in color value. So in short, neons should be worn with neons just as pastels should be worn with other pastels.
Avoid Colorful Pants - Brightly-colored pants have never looked right on men, especially if you dress to impress. Instead, rely on neutral colors for your pants such as blacks, whites, grays, and shades of beige. This will ensure that your wardrobe is balanced nicely since you've incorporated one color that is neutral and not distracting to the eye.
So while you wouldn't initially think there is a science to picking out colors that simply look good, there is in fact a set of color rules which dictate what is more pleasing to the eye. If you follow the above guidelines, you'll ensure that your wardrobe will always look coordinated and put together well.
