During the First World War, the pilots needed clothing that would keep them enough warmth when flying, because most airplanes had an open cockpit.  This started during the 1915, and the trend started from there.

One of jackets that were made for pilots before was the flight jacket or what you call a bomber jacket.  This eventually became a trend and became a part of the famous culture and apparel.

During this time, the jackets were made of heavy-duty leather flight jackets together with high wraparound collars and zipper closures.  They also have wind flaps, snug cuffs and waists, and some were designed with a line of fur and fringed.  This is how the leather jacket was born.

These jackets have numerous designs that you can choose from.  They even have names based on the type of flight or air craft these pilots took.

The official fight jacket of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corp flyers is the G-1.  It was made for easier movement in places which had very small cockpits with its double gussets under each arm.  It has the bi-swing pleat in the shoulder which extends down the back to a belted waist.

There is also another famous jacket called the A-2 Flight Jacket which was made famous by U.S. Army Airmen who wore them as a testament to their bravery, independence and skill.
